war republican politicians told americans that dissent would encourage a tax on u.s. troops abroad. that images of american torture in abu ghraib would inflame anti-american sentiment and democrats should heed the words of general david petraeus. now the coalition commander in afghanistan, he says a planned koran burning this saturday will encourage attacks on u.s. troops abroad and that images of the koran burning will inflame anti-american sentiment. so where are those republican politicians now? petraeus' remarks followed a protest yesterday in kabul. afghan protesters chanting "death to america" and throwing rocks at passing u.s. military convoys until the leaders of the rally told them to stop doing so. petraeus then gave an interview to "the wall street journal" about the koran burning and gave almost identical comments to other media as well. to quote him. it could endanger the troops and it could endanger the overall effort in afghanistan. it is precisely the kind of action the taliban uses and could cause significant problems not just here but everywhere in the world we ar

, whether they actually believe there's a moral equivalency there or they don't and they're using it for political purposes. either way, whichever it is, this is not just bad domestic politics for the president, and it is and they know it, for a variety of reasons, including it takes him off the economy and divides him from democrats, which is a big problem on a range of issues, but i almost resist talking about this as a political issue. this is a national security crisis. both of these issues are. you have general petraeus getting involved in a domestic matter of the first amendment issue shows the extraordinary extent to which people in the military are -- men and women overseas think this is a big enough deal, and to have it to be brought into domestic politics and inflamed by republicans, again, out of principle, maybe, out of political purposes maybe, whatever the reason is really a national and international tragedy. and unfortunately the president, for a variety of reasons, is too weak on his own to deal with it. >> i think you're right. howard? >> well, sitting in the pre

,000. and the surprising detail, the deficit is down. the treasury department reports the u.s. is on track to record a $1.3 trillion deficit for the first fiscal year of president obama's presidency. 8% lower. that is 8% lower despite the stimulus spending than the 2009 deficit which included the last months of the bush presidency and reflected economic policy signed into law by the end of 2008 by president bush. house republican leader john boehner wants to increase that deficit by $700 billion over ten years by extending those bush tax cuts on income over a quarter million. but with bob schieffer, he even admitted 99% of small businesses will see no benefit from the cut and that 3% of what he calls small businesses make half the money. >> in a joint committee on taxation, which is a nonpartisan body, says that only 3% of the small business people you keep talking about all the small business people that are going to get taxed, only 3% would be affected by that, or do you quarrel with that figure? is that a right figure or a wrong figure? >> well, it may be 3%, but it's half of small business income bec
